Abba gave England a Swedish flavoured soundtrack on New Year’s Eve.
‘Happy New Year’ by ABBA was the most streamed track on New Year’s Eve in the UK.
Spotify has revealed that ‘Happy New Year’ by Abba was the song music lovers across the world played to see in 2014.
As clocks struck midnight in the UK, music fans opted for a more traditional soundtrack with ‘Auld Lang Syne’.
‘Happy New Year’ was featured on Abba’s 7th studio album ‘Super Trouper’ but wasn’t released as a single until 1999. It then reached no. 4 in Sweden, no. 8 in The Netherlands and no. 75 in Germany.
The song was re-released in 2008 and reached no 4 in Sweden, no. 11 in Norway and no. 25 in Denmark.
Agnetha Fältskog sang lead vocal on the song.
Swedish pop group A-Teens covered the song in 2000 and for the third time peaked at no. 4 on the Swedish chart.
Abba Trivia: ‘Happy New Year’ had a working title of ‘Daddy Don’t Get Drunk On Christmas Day’ when the band were in the studio recording the Super Trooper album.
