Missy Higgins Proves True Australian Talent Still Exists At A Weekend In The Gardens

Missy Higgins is the real deal. There is no “pop star” here. Missy is a genuine singer, songwriter and musician. When she is on stage, what you see is what you get and what you get is raw talent.

From the moment Missy Higgins walks on stage and plays her first notes she captures the audience. This is a mesmerising show.

Her A Weekend In The Gardens was technically her first show of 2017 although she made an appearance at the Australian Open in January and then performed her Screen Music Awards nominated song at the Screen Music Awards earlier in the week (and she won, by the way).

It has been three years since her last album ‘Oz’ and five since her last album of original material. Missy used the stage to debut two new songs ‘Song For Sammy’ and ‘Cemetery’ from what I assume will be on a 2018 album. The Screen Music Award winning song ‘Torchlight’ was played live for the second time at this show.

With a music industry caught up on conveyor belt written songs and factory assembled pop stars, Missy is one of the few hopes that Australian music has a future beyond the current crop of Mattel-driven artists. She is world-class. If Paul Kelly is Australia’s Bob Dylan, then Missy Higgins is Australia’s Joni Mitchell.
