In September 1967 Sam (Moore) and Dave (Prater) released ‘Soul Man’. The song would become one of the greatest soul hits of the past half century.
On this day (November 11, 1967) the song reached number one of the US chart.
Sam Moore was doing the rounds of US television this week to mark the anniversary.
The song was written by Isaac Hayes and Dave Porter, the team who also wrote the other Sam & Dave classic ‘Hold On I’m Coming’. The backing band on the song is Booker T & The MGs.
In 1978, The Blues Brothers recorded a cover of the song.
Sam Moore re-recorded it with Lou Reed for the movie ‘Soul Man’ in 1986.
‘Soul Man’ earned Sam & Dave a Grammy in 1968 for Best Rhythm & Blues Performance, Vocal or Instrumental.
Sam Moore is still performing at age 82. Dave Prater died in a car crash in 1988.
