The Monkees were four individuals put together for a television in the 60s but their talents quickly merged to create a unique pop band.
The songs of The Monkees were crafted by unknown writers at the time who would become some of the greatest songwriters of a generation – people like Neil Diamond, Carole King and Harry Nilsson were Monkees songwriters before they reached their own solo heights.
The Monkees TV show lasted just two years but has never been out of syndication. The 58 episodes of the show, all featuring a Monkees song, gave these four guys a historic visual depth of catalogue that no other act at the time ever created, including The Beatles.
In 2016, Dolenz, Tork and Nesmith went back into the studio to create ‘Good Times’, a Monkees sounds 21st century album made up of old unfinished recordings (including Davy Jones vocals) and some from new songwriters from members of XTC, Weezer, Death Cab For Cutie and a Paul Weller and Noel Gallagher collaboration.
Micky Dolenz talked to Noise11’s Paul Cashmere about The Monkees.
