Big Day Out will not happen in 2015 of Austin based C3 became the sole owners of the event after director AJ Maddah sold out last week.
C3 have now confirmed that there will be no Big Day Out in 2015 ending months of speculation that began after poor attendances for 2014.
C3 owns Lollapalooza and Austin City Limits and bought into Big Day Out when founder Vivian Lees left in 2011. His co-founder Ken West had a quiet exit in 2013 shortly after Soundwave founder AJ Maddah joined the board as a co-owner.
Big Day Out was the iconic music festival in Australia. Less & West created the event in 1992 with Violent Femmes as headline act and Nirvana also towards the top of the bill/ The following year the event went national.
The Big Day Out had a tragic twist in 2001 with the death of concert goer Jessica Michalik in a crowd stampede. Limp Bizkit were accused of contributing to the unrest with “alarming and inflammatory’ comment.
Big Day Out had management unrest this year after co-headliner Blur abruptly departed the bill by announcing their exit on Twitter rather than via the promoter. That sent ticket sales into a downward spiral ending in the festival nationally selling 100,000 tickets less than the previous year and causing a $7 million loss for the event.
