Ellen Degeneres has invited viral sensations Walk Off The Earth to perform their Gotye and Kimbra cover on her ‘The Ellen Show’.
The Walk Off The Earth cover of Gotye and Kimbra’s ‘Somebody That I Used to Know’ has now passed 25 million views on YouTube in just one week.
The video became a viral sensation because of its novelty value of five people playing one guitar.
However, Walk Off The Earth featuring Sarah Blackwood’s version is exactly the same as Gotye featuring Kimbra’s version, right down to the very second. All of the way through you can superimpose each version and they match word for word along the way.
The song has made stars of the Canadian group stars over night.
On Facebook, the Walk Off The Earth peeps wrote, “Big ups to all the Walk off the Earth-lings out there who inundated ‘The Ellen Show’ with our videos over the past months. We received a call today from the producer of the show asking us to fly to L.A. to perform live on air! We will keep you posted on more details soon. This is sooo caaa-razzyy!!!”
The original version by Gotye and Kimbra was the biggest selling Australian song of 2011 and Gotye’s ‘Making Mirrors’ album was the biggest selling Australian album of last year.
‘Somebody That I Used To Know’ has just spent 3 weeks at number one in Germany.
The Gotye and Kimbra version of ‘Somebody That I Used To Know’ has clocked up 43,633,101 YouTube views.
Kimbra is currently in the USA. She will showcase at SXSW in March.
