Lynsey De Paul, the British pop who had a global hit in 1972 with ‘Sugar Me’, has died suddenly at the age of 64.
Lynsey was rushed to hospital in London after suffering a brain haemorrhage.
Lynsey De Paul’s ‘Sugar Me’ was a no 4 hit in Australia and reached no. 5 in the UK. She also had six other hit songs in the UK ‘Getting A Drag’ (no 18, 1972), ‘Won’t Somebody Dance With Me’ (no 14, 1973), ‘Ooh I Do’ (no. 25, 1973), ‘No Honestly’ (no. 7, 1974), ‘My Man And Me’ (no 40, 1975) and ‘Rock Bottom’ (no. 19, 1977). ‘Rock Bottom’ was the UK submission for the Eurovision Song Contest of 1977.
Lynsey also had multiple hits in Denmark, The Netherlands, Ireland, Belgium, Austria and Sweden.
De Paul was also a songwriter. Jack Wild (H.R. Puffinstuff) recorded three of her songs.
Lynsey was the first female to be awarded an Ivor Novello Award.
Lynsey’s relationships would have made her paparazzi fodder today but in her day she dated Ringo Starr, Sean Connery, Bernie Taupin and Dudley Moore with little press exposure. She never married.
In recent years Lynsey hosted her own show on Sky UK ‘Lynsey’s Love Songs.
