Following the recent announcement that A Tribe Called Quest would open for Kanye West during two New York shows in November, the hip hop legends have announced that the shows will be their last.
Member Q-Tip followed up the Kanye support announcement on Twitter with a revelation of his own. The rapper wrote “In August, ATCQ did our last show FOR Cali. It’s only right we do our FINAL 2 joints where we started…NYC”
Of course, things have been “final” before. From their original signing with Geffen in 1989 until their breakup following 1998’s The Love Movement, ATCQ was one of the most important rap acts in music. Each of the three members went on to solo careers before coming back together in 2004 for a one-off show and headlining stints in the 2006, 2008 and 2010 Rock the Bells concert series. This past year, they played a number of festivals including London’s Yahoo! Wireless and L.A.’s H2O.
While talk of a new album has been around for almost a decade, they never released anything after their “final” album, The Love Movement.
