Ex-King Crimson member Adrian Belew has composed the music for the new Pixar short Piper.
Piper, the story of a hungry sandpiper hatchling who ventures from her nest for the first time, will appear in theaters before the new Pixar feature Finding Dory.
The short was directed by Alan Barillaro who has worked on practically every one of Pixar’s features and was the supervising animator for The Incredibles, Wall*E and Brave. He then went on to work with the company’s software developers to help build in more flexibility for their animation software. The result was a a short animation test of a small bird, a sandpiper, on a beach. The test footage was eventually developed into the new feature.
For Belew, this is the first time he has written for film after forty-plus years as a musician including almost thirty years as the vocalist and guitarist for King Crimson (1981 to 2009), along with with periods working with Frank Zappa, David Bowie, Talking Heads, Tom Tom Club and Nine Inch Nails. He has also released over fifteen solo albums and was instrumental in designing the Parker Fly signature guitar.
Most recently, Belew released two iOS apps, FLUX by belew and FLUX: FX. The former mixes three hundred audio tracks and pieces of art in ever changing combinations while the latter provides realtime audio manipulation.
