Alanis Morissette is set to join the ranks of Queen, Abba, Green Day and Carole King with a Broadway show based on her music.
The Great White Way is becoming the Great Pop Music Way as more and more shows revolving around artist repertoires are hitting the boards.
Current Broadway productions include Rock of Ages (80’s rock bands), Mamma Mia! (ABBA), Jersey Boys (Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons), Motown: The Musical and A Night With Janis Joplin with upcoming shows including Beautiful: The Carole King Story and, possibly, Part of the Plan (Dan Fogelberg). Plus, that doesn’t even take into account shows written by artists like Sting (The Last Ship) and Cyndi Lauper (Kinky Boots).
The latest announcement has Alanis Morissette bringing a new musical the Broadway based on her landmark album Jagged Little Pill. The show is expected to include all twelve tracks from the original album plus other from Morissette’s catalog and a few new compositions.
Morissette said in a press release “I look forward to taking the heart of ‘Jagged Little Pill’ and expanding its story, fleshing it out into ever deeper layers of emotionality, specificity, humanity, power, physicality, spirit and fabulism. I look forward to collaborating with Vivek and Tom and our whole inspiring team to create something greater than the sum of our parts.”
Vivek and Tom are producers Arvind Ethan David and Vivek J. Tiwary who will bring the show to New York. Tiwary was one of the producers responsible for bringing Green Day’s American Idiot to Broadway. Tom Kitt, who worked with Tiwary on Idiot and wrote the Tony winning Back to Normal, will do the orchestrations and arrangements.
A workshop production is scheduled for sometime in 2014.
