Amy Grant released a video on Friday announcing an updated version of her 1991 hit Baby Baby with current hot singer Tori Kelly.
Grant had been trying to move from the Christian to secular music space for a few years, having released Straight Ahead (1984) and Unguarded (1985) as her fifth and sixth studio albums and her first two on a new contract with A&M Records but it was 1991’s Heart in Motion that finally pushed her full into pop music.
In the singles market, she had crossed over and had a previous number 1 in 1986 supporting Peter Cetera on The Next Time I Fall in Love but it was the first Heart in Motion single, Baby Baby, that gave Grant her first solo number 1. Written by Amy and Keith Thomas, the song stayed at the top of the charts for two weeks and led a run of five straight top twenty hits from the album.
Tori Kelly first came to prominence when she was only 14 through a series of songs she posted on YouTube. She independently released an EP in 2012, at 19, and, last June, put out her debut album, Unbreakable Smile, on Capitol, going to number 2 on the Billboard 200.
While the new version won’t be out until April 29, Grant did play a small bit on a video she released announcing the new single.
