British music promoter Lee Bennett was in Hollywood a number of years ago on the Hollywood Walk of Fame when his 10-year-old son asked why the U.K. didn’t have its own walk.

That was the start of a process that would end with the new British version of the walk that will honor great music icons.
The walk, which will start with the unveiling of thirty discs this summer, will be located in Camden Town and is officially licensed from its Hollywood sibling. Bennett’s plan is to have concerts and special events at all of the disc unveilings with hopes that groups long broken up will reform for the events.
The inductees will come from at least one of five groups, innovative artists, influential artists, icons, unsung heroes and members of the industry. To select the first inductees, a select group is putting together a short list of names which will be put on the walk’s site for a public vote starting in May. Nominees will come from all genres of music.
Already selected is the late-Amy Winehouse whose disc will be installed in September on what would have been her thirtieth birthday.
