Aretha Franklin has been going through something serious medically the last few years, but nobody but her closest confidants know what it is.
Franklin has cancelled shows on and off for the last three years including reported surgery in 2010 for what one family member leaked was cancer, although Aretha denied that diagnosis at a later date.
The mystery deepens farther after an interview with the Associated Press in which Franklin said “My treatments are going very well. My last CAT scan, my doctor at the CAT scan and everyone who sees this says that this is miraculous, absolutely miraculous.” She went on to say that it was something common to women but did not elaborate.
The singer continues to cancel appearances, even with the good diagnosis. She was scheduled to accept the Beacon Award on Saturday from Major League Baseball for her civil rights work but begged off, saying “I am unable to travel as I continue my treatment. I am working toward a full recovery.”
Franklin did reveal that she is planning a new album, her first since 2011’s A Woman in Love. “I can’t wait for that.”
