The Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA) will launch a new music chart based on streaming.
The ARIA streaming chart will compile data from all official music videos on YouTube, including Vevo on YouTube, and user-generated clips that incorporate audio recordings in addition Deezer, JB Now, Rdio, Google Play and Spotify for the new ARIA Top 40 Audio & Visual Streaming Chart.
The streaming chart is expected to have similarities to the ARIA singles chart but with streaming still more compatible with the under 30 demographic the new chart is expected to favour pop hits over established heritage artists.
The numbers are meant to give a clearly picture of audience listening habits. The current point of entry for a Top 40 song in Australia is less than 4000 sales in one week. In the past week 1022 sales got you in at number 100.
ARIA CEO Dan Rosen agrees that the audience has migrated in a major to YouTube for music consumption. “There is no denying the impact YouTube has today on music and popular culture,” Dan said. That immediate access to any song at any time has impacted severely in purchasing habits.
YouTube aren’t arguing with that logic. “YouTube has become a comprehensive music destination where people tune in, discover new music, and where musicians can strike a chord with new audiences. This new chart will reflect how music lovers are finding their new favorite songs and music videos online, as well as how artists are using their YouTube channels to find fame in Australia and across the world,” Partnerships Manager of YouTube Australia, Georgie Powell said.
ARIA will continue to base Gold and Platinum accreditations on sales. Gold is awarded for 35,000 units in Australia, Platinum is 70,000.
The first official ARIA Audio & Visual Streaming Chart will be unveiled on Saturday 16th May at 6pm and published on ariacharts.com.au.
