Members of R.E.M., The Posies, The Replacements and more perform Big Star’s Third album on the second anniversary of Alex Chilton’s death.
The music world was shocked two years ago when it was announced that Alex Chilton had passed away just three days before Big Star was to play at SXSW.
The show did go on that night as a tribute to Chilton with bandmates Jody Stephens, Jon Auer and Ken Stringfellow along with guests like Mike Mills (R.E.M.), M. Ward, Sondra Lerche, Susan Cowsill, Chuck Prophet and Evan Dando.
Another group of musicians will gather this Thursday night at Austin’s Paramount Theatre to perform the Big Star album Third.
Stamey says on the SXSW site, “There’s something about this record that connects with my generation, and apparently many generations. With this orchestrated performance we hope to breathe life into a bittersweet album that has come to mean so much to so many musicians and fans.”
The current lineup for the show includes:
Tommy Stinson (Replacements, Guns N’ Roses)
Mike Mills and Peter Buck (R.E.M.)
