Johnny Rebb, one of Australia’s original rock and rollers, has died at the age of 79.
Rebb was born John Dellbridge on March 20, 1935.
In the 50s after seeing the movie ‘Blackboard Jungle’ Dellbridge changed his name to Johnny Rebb and put together his band The Rebels. Their first single was a cover of Chuck Berry’s ‘Johnny B. Goode’ in 1958. He then signed with Leedon Records and released ‘Hey Sheriff/Noelene’ scoring his first top 40 hit in Sydney in January 1959. In mid 1959 ‘Pathway To Paradise/Rock’ on became his first national hit.
Rebb became a regular on Johnny O’Keefe’s ‘Six O’Clock Rock’ TV show and became the regular host whenever O’Keefe was away. Rebb went on to host the biggest dance in Sydney ‘Rock at the Troc’ at the Old Trocadero Ballroom in George Street, Sydney.
After the Rebels split in the mid-60s Johnny launched a solo career and recorded with The Atlantics.
In 1976 Rebb quit the music business and opened a panel-beating shop in Sydney.
The funeral for Johnny Rebb (John Dellbridge) will be held at Corpus Christi Church, 70 Platt St, Waratah (Newcastle) NSW at 11:30am Thursday August 7, 2014.
