iTunes is proving that the music trend this Christmas is Christmas music.
On Christmas Eve today there are seven Christmas albums in the top 10 on iTunes.
The perennial download album favourite for 2016 is the compilation ‘The Christmas Album 2016’ featuring Christmas classics from Wham, Mariah Carey, Sinatra, Elvis and NSYNC.
Michael Buble has continued to have the biggest selling Christmas album by an artist for 2016 at no 2 followed by no 3 John Farnham & Olivia Newton-John’s ‘Friends For Christmas’ collaboration then no 4 Mariah Carey’s ‘Merry Christmas’.
At no 8 there is ‘So Fresh: Songs of Christmas 2016’, no 9 ‘A Pentatonix Christmas’ by Pentatonix and 10 the ‘Greatest Ever Christmas Collection’.
Cold Chisel’s ‘The Best of Cold Chisel’ is back at no 6 with the Top 20 showing what appears to be more gift titles than personal purchases with compilations by Fleetwood Mac, Bruce Springsteen, Elvis Presley and Guns N Roses all featuring prominently.
You have to drill down to no 11 for an actual new non-Christmas artist album with Bruno Mars ‘24K Magic’ at no 11.
Because Christmas falls on a Sunday this year, figures from Friday 23 December, Saturday 24 December and Sunday 25 December will roll into next weekend’s chart, so expect a watered down version of more of the same by the time ARIA published these figures next week.
