The cinema rules the top of the ARIA Albums Chart again this week, with firstly the soundtrack to the Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper film ‘A Star is Born’ holding for a fourth week here, plus the album is now Gold (●) in sales too.
“A Star is Born” and its fourth week at the top becomes the second longest run at No.1 for a soundtrack this year, half of the eight weeks notched up by ‘The Greatest Showman’ set in January and February of this year, while this stay at the top increases Lady Gaga’s tally on the list for ‘Accumulated Weeks at No.1: Albums (1965 to 2018)’ from equal 83rd to now equal 78th alongside Avril Lavigne (9 weeks at No.1 from 3 #1 albums also), while for this decade list (2010’s) she is now equal seventh alongside One Direction who racked up nine weeks at the top with their four chart-topping albums.
The Queen biopic ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ and its soundtrack are on hold at No.2 for a third straight week, while the band are also in the Top 10 with two of their three charting best of’s in their 1981 released “Greatest Hits” holding at No.3 and their “Platinum Collection” down one spot to No.6, while this week they also have eight songs within the Top 100 singles chart too.
Four from four is the chart feat created this week by the highest new entry “Origins” by Imagine Dragons, the bands fourth album debuts at No.4, which is the same peak that their first three albums also peaked at, with their debut set “Night Visions” climbing to No.4 in August of 2013, while they then debuted and peaked at No.4 with “Smoke + Mirrors” (LP#2, February 2015) and “Evolve” (LP#3, July 2017, TW-47), while this current album has three of its four singles currently charting too.
The fourth live album for local rock act Midnight Oil debuts at No.5 entitled “Armistice Day: Live at the Domain, Sydney” and was recorded during their 2017 national return tour, and this now becomes their third Top 10 Live album after they previously charted with “Scream in Blue” (HP-3, May 1992) and “The Real Thing” (HP-7, July 2000), while their 2004 set “Best of Both Worlds” failed to chart and overall this is their thirteenth Top 10 album here.
The eighth studio album for Muse entitled “Simulation Theory” comes in at No.7 here and at No.1 in the UK, while it now becomes their fifth Top 10 album and seventh overall entry in Australia and their first since they hit the top with “Drones” in June of 2015. Also releasing their eight studio album are another English act, metalcore act Architects with “Holy Hell” which comes in at No.8 and is now their third chart entry here and second Top 10 placement as they hit No.2 with their last album “All Our Gods Have Abandoned us” (June 2016).
Local singer/songwriter Ziggy Alberts scores his first chart entry with his third album “Laps Around the Sun” which debuts at No.9 this week, and this is followed by the 50th Anniversary Edition of the Beatles ninth studio album which was self-titled but better known as ‘The White Album’, which returns to the chart at No.10 this week and it first charted here on the 21st of December, 1968 spending sixteen weeks at No.1 from that date up until the 5th of April, 1969, while the set also charted again in 1980 (after John’s passing, HP-66), 1987 (first CD release, HP-23) and lastly in 2009 (HP-15, first digital release), so this No.10 entry this week becomes its first Top 10 placement since its original chart run in 1968-69.
UP:
* After leaving the Top 10 for the first time last week the Ed Sheeran set “÷ (Divide)” is back up three spots this week to No.13, while his first set “+ (Positive)” rises fourteen spots to No.63.
* Ariana Grande’s new No.1 single pulls her current album (but not the one featuring the new single) “Sweetener” back up three spots to No.18, while she also climbs with “Dangerous Woman” (85 to 80) and returns with “My Everything” (No.87).
* Drake’s “Scorpion” is back up a spot to No.19 and scores it’s first certification and is now Gold (●) in sales.
* Queen outside of the Top 10 also rise with their “Greatest Hits II” (26 to 20) and their 1976 album “A Night at the Opera” (72 to 61).
* With the recent release on DVD and Blu-Ray of the film ‘Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again’ it’s soundtrack jumps up eleven spots this week to No.23, with other rising soundtracks being for ‘Moana’ (81 to 76) and Jimmy Barnes’ ‘Working Class Boy-The Soundtracks’ (returns at No.93).
* With the latest Billie Eilish track going back into the Top 10 her current albums chart entry “Don’t Smile at Me” is back up seven spots to No.24.
* The second album for XXXTentacion and “?” is back up one spot to No.27 and newly Gold (●) in sales.
* George Ezra rebounds seven places to No.28 with his second set “Staying at Tamara’s”.
* Pink rises back up with her two chart entries in her “Beautiful Trauma” (86 to 68) and her “Greatest Hits… So Far!!!” (42 to 38), with other rising best of’s being for Crowded House (70 to 65), ABBA (Gold 80 to 79), The Wiggles (88 to 82) and The Killers (returns at No.92).
* With Sam Smith touring the country at the moment his 2017 album “The Thrill of it All” jumps up nineteen spots this week to No.39.
* The new entry for Imagine Dragons’ fourth album helps pull their third set “Evolve” back up six places to No.47.
* The Gang of Youths live set leaves after two weeks of charting, but their last studio album “Go Farther in Lightness” is back up eleven spots to No.64.
* Further returning albums are “Graffiti U” for Keith Urban (winner of ‘Entertainer of the Year’ at No.86), “Red Pill Blues” for Maroon 5 (#91), recent tourist Callum Scott and “Only Human” (#95), future tourists The Arctic Monkeys with “AM” (#96) and Troye Sivan’s “Bloom” (#97).
DOWN:
* There are six albums leaving the Top 10 this week starting with Eminem’s “Kamikaze” (HP-1×2, WI10-10) which is down four spots to No.12 and leaves the ten for the first time plus is Gold (●) in sales, followed by “Reputation” for Taylor Swift (HP-1×2, WI10-15, which was No.1 this week last year) down eight places to No.14, “Si” for Andrea Bocelli (HP-7, WI10-2) drops down seven spots to No.16, and then three of last weeks Top 10 entries leave also in “Walls” (HP-7, WI10-1) for Barbra Streisand which is down fourteen spots to No.21, “Rainbow Valley” (HP-4, WI10-1) for Matt Corby falls down twenty-two spots to No.26 and finally all five of last weeks returned King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard albums all leave the Top 100 this week from No.15, No.14, No.13, No.12 and No.10 for “Eyes Like the Sun” (WI10-1).
* Rufus Du Sol and their third album “Solace” slides down six spots to No.29.
* Metro Boomin’ have the new US No.1 album this week with “Not All Heroes Wear Capes”, which here is down seventeen places to No.35.
* Disturbed drop ten spots to No.40 with their “Evolution” album.
* The self-titled fourth Shawn Mendes album is down four spots to No.41 and scores a Gold (●) sales certification.
* Triple J’s “Like a Version Vol.14” slips down eighteen places to No.42 this week.
* Now that her tour is over in Australia the 212 week old “1989” album drops back down seventeen spots to No.44.
* Post Malone’s older entry “Stoney” falls down eleven places to No.49.
* Morgan Evans’ “Things That We Drink to” album staggers down sixteen places to No.55.
* Bob Dylan’s entry from last week for “Bootleg Series Vol.14” plummets thirty-seven places to No.62.
* The Guns N’ Roses “Greatest Hits” falls back down ten spots to No.67, while also falling are best of’s for Maroon 5 (64 to 71), Bon Jovi (73 to 75) and Fleetwood Mac (92 to 98).
* Japanese singer joji and his set “Ballads 1” falls down twenty-seven spots to No.70 (the physical version was issued on Friday so it might not fall out next week).
* Nicki Minaj and her “Queen” album are down fifteen places to No.77, while Cher’s “Dancing Queen” covers album falls twenty-seven places this week to No.85.
* Cardi B is down twelve spots to No.78 with her debut set “Invasion of Privacy”.
* ChillinIt and his set “Women, Weed & Wordplay” falls twenty-seven spots also, down to No.81.
* BTS and their “Love Yourself: Answer” album falls back down twenty places to No.83 after returning last week.
* The Prodigy set “No Tourists” which debuts last week at No.19 has the biggest fall within the Top 100 this week, plummeting seventy-one places to land at No.90, while other debuts from last week to not land a second week were from Vince Staples (#47), Tenacious D (#59) and Exo (#67).
* The Kingdom Choir’s “Stand by Me” album drops back down twenty-four places to land at the end at #100.
CHRISTMAS TITLES:
* David Campbell has the highest charted seasonal set this week as his album “Baby it’s Christmas” jumps up eleven places to a new peak of No.25.
* Last week Michael Buble sneaked back into the chart at No.78 with his annually charting set “Christmas”, which this week leaps up forty-eight places to land at No.30, and with his new album “❤️ (Love)” issued on Friday he should have two entries on the chart next week.
* Human Nature are back up eight spots to No.37 with their set “The Christmas Album”.
* John Farnham and Olivia Newton-John’s “Friends for Christmas” is up five spots to No.43.
* Mark Vincent scores a new peak of No.51 with his seasonal album “The Most Wonderful Time of the Year”, up six spots from last week.
* Mariah Carey’s 1994 set “Merry Christmas” returns at No.73 this week, and as she also issued a new album on Friday she could be like Mr. Buble and have two charting albums next week also.
FURTHER NEW ENTRIES:
* #15 (LP#2) – Come on Over When You’re Sober, Pt.2 by Lil’ Peep is the second album and first posthumous release from the rapper who was killed just over a year ago from a drug overdose (15-Nov, 2017) and this also becomes his first albums chart entry here too, as his same titled Part 1 album didn’t chart here.
* #33 (LP#2) – Experiment by Kane Brown is the second album for the US country singer who took his self-titled debut set to No.60 in December 2016, so this now becomes his highest charted album here.
* #36 (MixT#3) – A Love Letter to You 3 by Trippe Redd is the third mixtape for the US rapper and now his second chart entry, as his debut album “Life’s a Trip” made it to No.14 here back in August, with this mixtape featuring guests such as Juice WRLD and Tory Lanez among its sixteen tracks.
* #50 (LP#3) – Blue by Jonas Blue is the debut album for the UK DJ and producer with all five of his charted singles here appearing on the album from his first single in “Fast Car” (HP-1, peaked Feb 2016) to his most recent entry in “Rise” (HP-7, peaked Sept 2018), while the albums latest track is “Polaroid” with Liam Payne and Lennon Stella.
* #59 (LP#7) – As the Kingdom Drowns by Psycroptic is their second chart entry here in Australia, as their sixth and self-titled album from March of 2015 also debuted and peaked at No.59, just like this new set.
