Ed Sheeran remains in the No.1 spot for an eleventh broken week on the ARIA Albums chart with his third studio album “÷ (Divide)”.
“÷ (Divide)” now takes Ed’s tally of weeks at No.1 to twenty overall, moving him to equal 24th on the list for ‘Accumulated Weeks at No.1: Albums; 1965-2017′ alongside the twenty weeks (also from three #1 albums) racked up by Mariah Carey. Plus on the same list for this decade, Ed is now two weeks away from the 22wks that Michael Buble has notched up during this decade. And “÷ (Divide)” also becomes one of fifteen albums that have racked up eleven weeks at the top, including Beatles albums “Beatles for Sale”, “Help!” (both 1965) and “Rubber Soul” (1966), plus the self-titled ABBA (1975/76) album, Skyhooks’ “Ego is Not a Dirty Word” (1975), “Tattoo You” for The Rolling Stones (1981), “Thriller” for Michael Jackson (1983/4), the second “Whitney” album (1986), “Man of Colours” by Icehouse (1987), the soundtracks for “Titanic” (1998) and “Moulin Rouge” (at this time in 2001), and the last album to spend eleven weeks at the top was the debut set for Susan Boyle and “I Dreamed a Dream” (2009/10).
The fourth solo album for former Powderfinger lead singer Bernard Fanning is the highest new entry this week, as “Brutal Dawn” debuts at No.2, matching the peak and entry position that the albums companion piece “Civil Dusk” achieved back in mid-August of 2016, that album returning at No.35 this week; and his first two albums both entered at No.1 “Tea & Sympathy” (Nov 2005) and “Departures” (June 2013). Another Aussie act with their fourth album, but now third Top 10 are In Hearts Wake from Byron Bay, the metalcore act enter at No.3 with “ARK”, following up from “Skydancer” (HP-2, May 2015), “Earthwalker” (HP-5, May 2015) and their first entry “Divination” (HP-27, Sept 2012).
Harry Styles’ debut self-titled album slips down two places this week to No.4, and returning to the Top 100 at No.5 is the 50th Anniversary Edition of the eighth Beatles album “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band”, which rings up its 87th week inside the Top 10, and the first time back within the ten since the initial CD re-issue this week in 1987 (8th June, 1987) where it jumped to No.4 in its second week on the chart, spending four weeks back within the ten. Originally the album was released on the 1st of June in 1967, and the UK chart dated the 3rd of June saw it debut at No.1 spending 28 weeks at the top there, where it returns for 29th week this very week in the UK. Here the album entered at No.1 in the first week of August (5th) and spent the next 30 weeks at top here.
The “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.2” soundtrack, “DAMN.” by Kendrick Lamar and “x (Multiply)” for Ed Sheeran are all down two places apiece to numbers six, seven and eight respectively, whilst Ed again has three albums within the Top 10, as his first set “+ (Positive)” is back up four places to No.10. In between those two Ed album is the third new and fifth overall entry to the Top 10 this week, as the thirteenth studio album for Frenzal Rhomb entitled “Hi-Vis High Tea” debuts at No.9, and this now becomes the bands first ever Top 10 entry, their previous best effort was 1999 fifth album “A Man’s Not a Camel” which debuted and peaked at No.11 in mid-April of that year, and overall this is their ninth albums chart entry.
