Exactly ten years after the initial explosion for the soundtrack for “Mamma Mia!” (21st July, 2008 for 5 weeks) the follow-up collection of ABBA songs for the sequel/prequel movie “Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again” climbs to the top of the ARIA Albums Chart.

“Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again” becomes the 831st No.1 Album in Australia (1965 to 2018) and the 682nd for ARIA (1983 to 2018), plus the 20th for the Polydor record label since their first in March of 1968 (50 years ago, Cream with “Disraeli Gears” in late March), with their last No.1 being The Rolling Stones set “Blue & Lonesome” (12th Dec, 2016).

This new No.1 album becomes the 51st soundtrack (TV or cinema) to hit No.1 in Australia and the second for this year after “The Greatest Showman” stayed for eight weeks from the 8th of January (and it is back up to No.2 again this week), and this becomes only the second soundtrack from a cinema series to land a second No.1 album, as the “50 Shades of Grey” (16-Feb, 2015) and “50 Shades Darker” (20th Feb, 2017) sets both hit the top here, while I could also include the TV series Glee who scored two No.1 albums in May 2010 and March 2011. The album also takes out the top spot in both New Zealand and England

This is the sixth time that the word ‘Here’ has appeared in a No.1 album title, the second ‘we’, the seventh ‘go’ and the third ‘Again’, while of course the original ‘Mamma Mia!’ soundtrack was at the top ten years ago this week in its second of five weeks at No.1, while overall this is the sixth album of ABBA songs to hit No.1 in Australia (3 in 1975/76, one in 1992 and then ‘Mamma Mia!’ in 2008). It is also the second time this year that the top two albums have been soundtracks as “The Greatest Showman” is back up one spot to No.2 and back in late February and early March the top sets were ‘Showman’ alongside the “Black Panther” set (TW-33).

For a third week at the top in both America and Canada is the Drake set “Scorpion”, which is down one place to No.3 and last weeks No.1 debut for Amy Shark and “Love Monster” drops down three places this week to land at No.4. “÷ (Divide)” for Ed Sheeran is on hold at No.5 as it logs its 73rd week with in the Top 5, Post Malone with “Beerbongs & Bentleys”, “Beautiful Trauma” for current national tourist Pink, the self titled Shawn Mendes album and XXXTentation and “?” all climb back up one spot to numbers six, seven, eight and nine respectively, making the top eight albums all current or former No.1 albums in Australia, while Pink also sees her “Greatest Hits… So Far!!!” climb back up three places to No.10 for a 29th week with in the Top 10, the last time it was within the ten was in October of 2017.
