Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee along with added vocals by Justin Bieber are at No.1 for an eighth straight week with their Spanish infused hit “Despacito”, becoming Justin’s longest run at the top in Australia now.
Previously JB had spent seven weeks at No.1 with “Love Yourself” (from mid-Dec, 2015), but now that “Despacito” has stayed at the top for an eighth week it is now his longest run at the chart summit, and the song is now one week shy of the longest run at the top of the Australian charts for a Spanish sung song, the current leader on nine weeks is the “Macarena” by Los Del Rio which was at the top from the start of September to the end of October in 1996. The other feat achieved this week is that Justin has now notched up 23 weeks at No.1 here from his five chart-topping singles, placing him equal FIRST for this decade on the list of ‘Accumulated Weeks at No.1: 2010’s; Singles’, matching the 23 weeks achieved by Rihanna (who is at #3 this week). He also moves up on the list for ‘Accumulated Weeks at No.1: 1940-2017’ from outright 29th to now equal 26th alongside the 23 weeks racked up by John Farnham (from 4 #1’s, one during each four decades from the 60’s to the 90’s).
Niall Horan was in the country last week for a promo tour, and he sang his current single “Slow Hands” on ‘The Voice: Grand Final’ last Sunday night (2nd July), which helps the track to rebound three spots and land at a new peak of No.2 this week (previously it had spent two broken weeks at No.3), and it is the #1 digital song for this week too (#7 Streamed), whilst his former band-mate Liam Payne drops down one spot to No.4 with “Stript That Down”, which is newly ▲Platinum. Last weeks No.2 “Wild Thoughts” for DJ Khaled with Rihanna and Bryson Tiller is back down one spot to No.3 and newly certified Gold (●) in sales, whilst DH Khaled’s other Top 5 entry “I’m the One” with Justin Bieber moves down a spot to No.5 this week.
In the USA Singles Chart this week the Imagine Dragons track “Thunder” leapt from 11 to 6, here it does a similar movement, up six places from last weeks #12 to this week a new peak of No.6, becoming the bands fourth Top 10 hit in Australia, and it matches the peak of their first Top 10 hit “Radioactive”, which climbed to No.6 in mid-July of 2013 (almost four years ago), and their first Top 10 entry since 2016’s ensemble hit “Sucker for Pain” (HP-7), plus they also sit at No.6 over on the albums chart this week with their third album “Evolve” (#1 in Canada this week).
Down a place each are Shawn Mendes’ “There’s Nothing Holdin’ Me Back” (he song this song on the Graham Norton Show last Friday the 30th June) and “Mama” for Jonas Blue and William Singe to No.7 and No.8 respectively, whilst Jonas and William pick up a sales cert of ▲Platinum this week and the same sales achievement has been given to the current Charlie Puth track “Attention”, on hold at No.10 for a second week. The second song climbing into the Top 10 this week is the latest track for Calvin Harris, who is joined by Katy Perry, Pharrell Williams and Big Sean for “Feels”, which leaps up seventeen places to land at No.9, becoming Calvin’s thirteenth Top 10 hit in Australia, the fifteenth for Katy Perry, the sixth for Pharrell Williams and finally the third for Big Sean here. This is the first of four tracks from his new album that have charted to have reached the Top 10 here too, with that album debuting within the Top 5 this week too.
