Winner of the 2014 series of ‘The Voice’, Anja Nissen, is now the representative for Denmark in the 2017 Eurovision Song Contest with her power ballad “Where I Am” (released on the 28th of Feb.)
This is not the first time that Anja has competed in the Dansk Melodi Grand Prix, having placed second in the 2016 edition of the annual search for the Danish Eurovision song entrant, and now second time lucky for the half Dane-Half Aussie, who joins other such former Australians in competing in the contest. Back in 1974, Olivia Newton-John competed for Eurovision for England singing the song “Long Live Love” (finishing fourth for that year behind “Waterloo” by ABBA in the first place). Another ex-pat also sang for the United Kingdom in 1996 when Gina G. performed “Ooh Aah… Just a Little Bit” (7th highest for the year,), placing at No.1 in the UK singles chart and No.5 in Australia.
Anja has so far seen two singles chart here in Australia, most recent was the cover song of “Anyone Who Had a Heart” (HP-30, June 2015) and prior to that her post-Voice-win single “I’m So Excited” (HP-42, Nov 2014) featuring and produced by her Voice mentor Will.i.am. Whilst her self-titled post-show album debuted and peaked at No.11 in August of 2014.
So this will be one of the few times that an Australian act is represented alongside an Australian performer, as Australia is again sending a contestant over to Kiev in the Ukraine, which will be revealed on or after March the 7th, 2017.
