South by Southwest has announced a new batch of artists from around the world, including Australia’s own Lanie Lane and Oh Mercy.
They bring Australia’s tally to four bands heading over there in 2012, joining the already announced Black Ryder from Sydney and Big Scary from Melbourne.
They’ll head off to showcase their talents at the world’s biggest music industry conference.
The complete list of bands revealed in the second announcement today is:
Alabama Shakes (Athens, AL), Asking Alexandria (York, UK), Atlantic/Pacific (Brooklyn, NY), Bad Weather California (Denver, CO), Belligerence (Portsmouth, UK), Ben Howard (Devon, UK), Blouse (Portland, OR), Capsula (Bilbao, Spain), Choir of Young Believers (Copenhagen, Denmark), Dikes of Holland (Austin, TX), Duran (Bogota, Colombia), Edison Chair (Austin, TX), Electric Eel Shock (Tokyo, Japan), Electric Wire Hustle (Wellington, NZ), Elias Haslanger (Austin, TX), Extrawelt (Hamburg, Germany), Fallulah (Copenhagen, Denmark), Films of Colour (London, UK), Go Back To The Zoo (Amsterdam, The Netherlands), Hunters (Brooklyn, NY), Idiot Glee (Lexington, KY), J.R. Patton (Dallas, TX), Juan Cirerol (Mexicali, Mexico), Led Er Est (New York, NY), Lilly Wood and the Prick (Paris, France), Lonsdale Boys Club (London, UK), Lucero (Memphis, TN), Miles Zuniga (Austin, TX), New Look (Hamilton, Canada), Nick Jaina (Portland, OR), Nive Nielsen & The Deer Children (Nuuk, Greenland), Pat Todd and the Rankoutsiders (Los Angeles, CA), Polarsets (Newcastle, UK), PUJOL (Nashville, TN), Psychic Ills (New York, NY), Radiation City (Portland, OR), Schmillion (Austin, TX), Teengirl Fantasy (New York, NY), The Abramson Singers (Vancouver, BC), The Record Summer (New York, NY), Turbo Fruits (Nashville, TN), Wheelchair Sports Camp (Denver, CO), You Can’t Win, Charlie Brown (Lisbon, Portugal), Zulu Winter (London, UK).
Do you feel a little overwhelmed by that list? I’ll be honest, I’ve never heard of most of those artists, but here’s a few to hone in on if you’re curious:
Electric Eel Shock – The one band on there that I most definitely am familiar with. Japanese punk/metal at it’s finest.
Duran – This bizarre Colombian hip hop group might not be rapping in a language I understand, but I suspect this would be a live show you wouldn’t soon forget.
Nive Nielsen & The Deer Children – Until today I had never heard a band from Greenland. I’m glad I have now. Beautiful voice and great folky melodies.
You Can’t Win, Charlie Brown – It’s as if Crosby, Stills and Nash had formed in 2009. Magnificent.
Take the time to poke around these artists, you might discover your new favourite band.
South by South West takes place in Austin, TX, March 13 – 18.
