Avicii moves up to No.1 in Australia this week with his first chart-topping single here “Wake Me Up” featuring Aloe Blacc as guest vocalist, the track also achieves Gold (●) sales status this week too.

“Wake Me Up” becomes the 1005th No.1 single in Australia (1940 to 2013) and the 443rd for ARIA (1983 to 2013), plus he becomes the sixth Swedish act to top the charts here after Abba, Roxette, Ace of Base, Crazy Frog and most recently in November 2012 Swedish House Mafia, and Avicii also becomes the first solo Male Swede to do so (Crazy Frog is classed as a cartoon character).

In July 1984 Wham! spent seven broken weeks at No.1 with “Wake Me Up Before You Go Go”, with the only other ‘Wake’ to top the Australian charts being Boris Gardiner in March 1987 for a single week with “I Wanna Wake Up with You”. “Wake Me Up” also becomes the 14th No.1 for Universal since their first back in December 1997 (“Doctor Jones” by Aqua) and their first since October last year when PSY went to the top with “Gangnam Style”, and Avicii’s new No.1 is the tenth chart-topping single for the year.

So after eight weeks at the top of the ARIA Singles chart, Robin Thicke with T.I. and Pharrell drops back to No.2 with “Blurred Lines”, the track also picking up a fifth Platinum (▲) certification, and the song is now tied for the third-equal longest running No.1 of the decade with “Whistle” for Flo Rida and “Somebody That I Used to Know” for Gotye and Kimbra.

Blasting up nine places to land at a new peak of No.3 is OneRepublic with “Counting Stars”, becoming their second Top 10 hit, as their first was the No.1 single from December 2007 “Apologize”. Their former second best effort was the No.11 single “Stop and Stare” (peaked March 2008). The OneRepublic jump pushes last weeks No.3 single “Parachute” for Timomatic back down to No.4 and a second (of three) Top 10 entries this week sees Miley Cyrus jump up eight places to No.5 with “We Can’t Stop” (now ●) becoming her fifth Top 10 hit here and her first since “Party in the USA” (HP-6, peaked mid-Nov 2009), plus it also becomes her equal highest charting single in Australia, matching the No.5 peak of “The Climb” (peaked mid-June 2009).

Jessie J with Big Sean’s “Wild” and Imagine Dragons’ “Radioactive” climb two places each to new peaks of No.6 and No.7 respectively, but down four places to No.8 is Olly Murs with “Dear Darlin’” (HP-4) whilst Matt Corby holds at No.10 with “Resolution” (now ▲).

NEW #9 – Firestarter – Samantha Jade

2012 X-Factor winner Samantha Jade lands her first chart entry for 2013 by debuting at No.9 this week with her new track; “Firestarter”. This becomes her seventh chart entry overall since she first charted in September 2007 with “Turn Around” (HP-83 {later HP-53 in Nov 2012}), and by debuting inside the Top 10 it becomes her second Top 10 hit after her November 2012 No.1 single “What You’ve Done to Me”.

NEW PEAKS & MOVERS: With Pink in the country for the past two weeks this helps her new single “True Love” to halve it’s entry position from last week, as it jumps thirteen places to No.13 this week, whilst Macklemore & Ryan Lewis return to their former peak of No.17 with “Wing$”. Sheppard are up two places and into the Top 20 at No.19 with their self-titled EP featuring “Never Let Me Down”, and up five places to No.24 is “Riptide” by Vance Joy (both now ●). Lorde climbs up six places and into the Top 30 to No.26 with “The Love Club” EP, and Naughty Boy is up nine places to a new peak of No.28 with “La La La”. Thanks to its use in the final ‘Packed to the Rafters’ episode ever Jason Mraz’s “I Won’t Give Up” (HP-22) blasts back up forty-eight places to No.30. Sebastian Ingrosso and Tommy Trash climb to a new peak of No.35 with “Reload” and jumping into the Top 50 is “Love Me Again” by John Newman (55 to 40) and “Clarity for Zedd featuring Foxes (51 to 45).

DOWN DOWN: After fifteen weeks inside the Top 5 (nothing lower than #5) and five weeks at No.1, Passenger drops six places to No.11 with “Let Her Go”, whilst another former No.1 (one week) is down five spots to No.12, Daft Punk’s “Get Lucky” which stayed for ten weeks inside the Top 10, this being its first week outside of the top ten. The third and final dropout is “Pompeii” for Bastille which spent eleven weeks inside the Top 10, two weeks at No.4, and it could be back in there soon as the group will be touring here in August. Ricky Martin’s “Come With Me” is down ten places to No.21, but picks up a Gold (●) certification, whilst debuting the same week was “Heart Hypnotic” for Delta Goodrem which is down fourteen places to No.31 this week. Down eight spots to No.32 is Rudimental with “Waiting All Night” and The Stafford Brothers say “Hello” to No.38 having fallen down eleven places this week. J Lo and Pitbull are down eleven places also to No.47 with “Live it Up” whilst Bruno Mars’ “When I Was Your Man” falls fourteen places to No.57. Also all Harrison Craig tracks drop out of the Top 100 this week, with both “Unconditional” (from #48) and “Unchained Melody” (from #54) the biggest fall-outs for the week.

NEW #34 – Classic – MKTO

Duo MKTO land their second chart entry in Australia this week by debuting at No.34 with “Classic”, the follow-up to their April No.2 (for straight 3 weeks) track “Thank You”, which is down to No.44 this week.

NEW #50 – Alive – Hillsong Young & Free

Hillsong has regularly landed Top 10 albums (something they do again this week too), but as for the singles chart, they have only had one previous entry, “It is Well With My Soul” (HP-87 as Hillsong Live) back in January 2011. So this week Hillsong Young and Free debut at No.50 with “Alive”, the first taste from the bands forthcoming debut album.

Lower 50: The Preatures jump up twenty-seven places to a new peak of No.71 with “Is This How You Feel?” being the only new peak in the lower fifty this week. Returning tracks to the Top 100 include “Try” (HP-6) for Pink at No.79, “Hey Now” (HP-71) by Martin Solveig at No.93, “I Knew You Were Trouble” (HP-3) for Taylor Swift at No.94 and back in at No.100 are Swedish House Mafia with “Don’t You Worry Child” (HP-1).

Sydney singer/guitarist Mark Wilkinson lands his first ARIA Singles chart entry at No.69 with “Middle Ground”, whilst another local act in Bliss N’ Eso debut with two further tracks from this week’s new No.1 album “Circus in the Sky”. “Act Your Age” is new at No.78 and “I Am Somebody” debuts at No.80, whilst they are also charting with “Home is Where the Heart is” (#96) and “Reservoir Dogs” (#97). Lastly debuting at No.91 is Disclosure featuring Eliza Doolittle with “You & Me (Flume Remix)”.
