Baby Animals Prepare For A Red Hot Summer of Touring

by Paul Cashmere on October 16, 2019

When Baby Animals hit the road to start touring the summer of 2019/2020 they’ll be packing enough socks and undies for six months. After a quick whip around the country with The Angels in November and December, Baby Animals will be part of Red Hot Summer 2020.

“It is fantastic. It is well run. The audiences are great. It burns from the start,” Baby Animals guitarist Dave Leslie tells Noise11.com. “This time around we are on quiet early, around 4:30 but the first band on is as important as the last band on. It’s a great catch-up for us. There are about eight bands on the bill. It’s a good hang, a good chat, we like it a lot”.

The great thing about Red Hot Summer is that you are pretty much guaranteed a greatest hits setlist. “You are encouraged to play your singles and give the people what they want,” Dave says. “It’s a great deal for the punters. There are a lot of happy punters out there. It’s great to see a sea of smiling faces … and you get to see other bands. That gives us a bit of a shot in the arm. When you go on after a band that’s done a blistering set the gauntlet has been thrown down and we have to bring it. It makes for good rock and roll”.

Dave says Baby Animals also ‘keep to the script’. “Every Baby Animals songs that we do is an eclectic mix but it all still sounds like us,” he says. “We thought a while ago about rewriting ‘Rush You’ but it sometimes backfires. If you try to be contrived people will access that. We’d rather let the songs be what they are”.

Reinventing the songs is not the Baby Animals style. “If you are Bob Dylan you can do that. If we hit the audience with a reggae version of ‘Early Warning’ it probably wouldn’t go down too well. It might be a laugh to do but you have to stay true to what people know, especially when we do Red Hot Summer. It’s a nostalgia trip. People come along expecting to drink some beer, sing a long and have some fun. If we were to divert from that it wouldn’t be effective. As for Dylan, you go to see the man. He can do whatever he wants”.
