Bachman-Turner Overdrive will be inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame at this year’s Juno Awards in March.
This will be member Randy Bachman’s second induction into the Canadian hall of fame after becoming a member in 1987 with the Guess Who. Bachman had left the Guess who in May of 1970 to return to his native Winnipeg where he formed the group Brave Belt with another ex-bandmate, Chad Allan, and his brother Randy. The band added C.F. “Fred” Turner shortly after the release of their first album to play bass on the supporting tour. Another Bachman, Tim, joined in 1971 when Allan left the band.
After recording the third Brave Belt album, a manager at Mercury Records convinced them to change their name and Bachman-Turner Overdrive was born. Their first album was released in May of 1973 and established them on both sides of the border but it was the second album, Bachman-Turner Overdrive II, that pushed them into the big times with the singles Let It Ride (1974 / #23 U.S. / #3 Canada), Takin’ Care of Business (1974 / #12 U.S. / #3 Canada) and You Ain’t Seen Nothing Yet (1974 / #1 U.S. / #1 Canada).
Their next album, Not Fragile, hit number 1 in the U.S. and produced three top ten hits in Canada, Roll On Down the Highway (1975 / #21 U.S. / #4 Canada), Hey You (1975 / #21 U.S. / #1 Canada) and Quick Change Artist (1975 / #7 Canada). Their follow-up album, 1975’s Four Wheel Drive, also made the top ten in the U.S. but their hit days were starting to come to an end.
Randy Bachman left the group in 1977 for a solo career and the other members continued on under the name BTO with new lead Jim Clench of April Wine. The full group broke up in 1979 but reunited in 1983 with Randy and Tim Bachman, Fred Turner and Garry Peterson, also formerly of the Guess Who. The album BTO was released the next year, the last for the group. Randy and Fred did record an album in 2010 called Bachman and Turner.
The Juno Awards will be given out on March 30 in Hamilton, Ontario.
