Even though the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame originally announced that they would be announcing their updates on December 15, the list was released early to the public.
The inductees include four previously nominated artists (Beastie Boys and Laura Nyro had been nominated twice before, Donovan and the Red Hot Chili Peppers once), one who had been previously eligible but had not been nominated (Small Faces/Faces who had been eligible for 20 years) and one who were in their first year of eligibility (Guns N’ Roses). In addition, Freddie King, who was nominated but did not get enough votes from the general voting members, was selected by a smaller committee as an early influence. He had been eligible since the Hall first opened but this was his first nomination.
Nominated but not making the cut this year were the Cure, Eric B. & Rakim, Heart, Joan Jett & the Blackhearts, Rufus Featuring Chaka Khan and the Spinners.
Also making it in by the vote of subcommittees was manager and TV host Don Kirshner (Ahmet Ertegun Award for non-performers), New Orleans based engineer Cosimo Matassa, Atlantic Records engineer and producer Tom Dowd and engineer and producer Glyn Johns (all three receiving the Award of Musical Excellence).
“We are pleased to announce this year’s Hall of Fame inductees, who represent the broad spectrum of artists that define rock and roll,” says Joel Peresman, President and CEO of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Foundation. “We are also thrilled this year to again be partnered with HBO, who presented the Hall of Fame’s 25th Anniversary Concerts.”
The ceremony will be held on Saturday, April 14 and will be broadcast live on HBO. Unfortunately, the ceremony will not be back on Fuse who had broadcast it the last few years.
