Beth Ditto’s autobiography isn’t “like a Paris Hilton story”.
The 31-year-old singer from American band Gossip has opened up about her book Coal to Diamonds.
It’s a hard-hitting story as the memoir charts her abuse-ravaged upbringing, rather than focusing on the glamorous rock star life people might expect her to lead on.
“The book is really hard for me to talk about – and not because of the abuse. I think people really wanted it to be about me partying and meeting Kate Moss and Karl Lagerfeld,” Beth explained to British newspaper Metro. “I don’t feel famous and I didn’t want my autobiography to be like a Paris Hilton story. I wanted a metaphor for a mindset – and coal can be as powerful as diamonds.”
Despite her huge success with Gossip and as a solo artist, Beth prefers to live her life away from the spotlight.
The iconic and controversial star couldn’t cope with city dwelling 24/7 and is happy to call Arkansas in the US her home to this day.
“I could never work it in the city,” Beth explained. “I love London, I still have a room there, but I don’t know how to ride the Tube. It’s just overwhelming. And every time we play a big show I’m like, ‘How many times could you fit my home town in here?'”
