The Beyonce performance of her ‘Lemonade’ album at the MTV VMAs in New York yesterday has generated over 15 million views on Facebook, more than double the number of people who watched the show on TV.
Beyonce performed a 15 minute melody of songs from her recent ‘Lemonade’. The show also had performances from Rihanna and Britney Spears but the audience didn’t care.
The 2016 VMAs was down 34% in ratings this year generating 6.5 million viewers across MTV and its further 10 sister networks.
However, the audience didn’t watch the show on TV. Around 90% of viewers were online with the event generating 62.8 million video streams representing a 70% increase on the 2015 figure. Facebook alone generated 45.8 million streams including the 15 million streams for the Beyonce performance.
The MTV VMAs may have been the talk of Twitter and Facebook.
Beyonce was the major winner of the 2016 VMAs picking up around half of the awards on offer.
Beyonce was nominated for 11 awards in 2016 and won eight of the 17 awards. As well as Video of the Year she also won Best Female Video for ‘Hold Up’, Best Pop Video for ‘Formation’, Best Long Form Video for ‘Lemonade’, Best Choreography for ‘Formation’, Best Direction for ‘Formation’, Best Cinematography for ‘Formation’ and Best Editing for ‘Formation’.
Beyonce leads the pack for nominations, while British powerhouse Adele follows with eight nods thanks mainly to her comeback hit single Hello, from her album 25.
Seven of her nominations, including Video of the Year, are for the track, which she released last year (15) after a three-year hiatus, while her eighth nomination is in the Best Visual Effects category.
The 28-year-old faces stiff competition in the top category, which also features Beyonce’s Formation, Drake’s Hotline Bling, Justin Bieber’s Sorry and Kanye West’s controversial Famous video.
Meanwhile, Beyonce’s Formation also picked up nods for Best Pop Video, Best Direction, Best Cinematography, Best Editing, and Best Choreography, with the superstar gaining a second entry in that category for her Sorry video.
Her track Hold Up also landed nods for Best Female Video and Best Art Direction, while her song Freedom, which features rapper Kendrick Lamar, scored a nomination in the Best Collaboration category.
Unsurprisingly, Lemonade, which the R&B superstar debuted in a TV special in April (16), also received a nod in the Breakthrough Long Form Video category.
Other stars to receive multiple nominations include Drake, with six, Ariana Grande, with five, and Rihanna, with four.
