Big Scary have been named victorious for the 9th Australian Music Prize for their ‘Not Art’ album.
The announcement was made at The Basement in Sydney with the nominees, including Tom Iansek and Joanna Syme from Big Scary in attendance.
“We’re huge fans of the AMP,” Big Scary said in a statement. “Any award that has bands like The Mess Hall and Eddy Current Suppression Ring in its short history of winners has got to be doing something right.”
For their win Big Scary picked up a cheque from PPCA for $30,000. “Support for local artists has been the cornerstone of PPCA for over 40 years,” said CEO Dan Rosen. “We are honoured to have been the major prize sponsor of the Australian Music Prize since day one. We hope that PPCA’s $30,000 contribution will assist in developing Big Scary’s career and help take their music to the world”.
Big Scary were shortlisted along with Beaches, Cloud Control, Dialectrix, Horrorshow, Jagwar Ma, Jen Cloher, Jimblah and Kirin J Callinan.
