Bob Dylan ‘Blowin’ In The Wind’ Manuscript Sold For $325000

On Saturday (December 10), Southby’s held an auction of rock memorabilia from throughout the years, raising $847,318.

A Rock & Roll Anthology: From Folk to Fury included 134 lots associated with artists like The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, The Who, David Bowie and many more. 62 of the lots sold while the rest were either withdrawn or went unsold.

Two lots were on the low end of the scale, bringing in $375 each, a promotional poster for Blind Faith’s one studio album with the original album artwork of a nude young girl which was banned in a number of countries, and a Woodstock Festival poster.

At the high end was an autographed manuscript signed by Bob Dylan with the lyrics of Blowin’ in the Wind, one of four that are known to exist. This one is dated 1962 and was written in pencil on unlined paper. The final selling price was $324,500 on an estimate of $300,000 to $500,000.

Other major items which sold:

A black, wool jacket worn by John Lennon in the movie Help! ($50,000 on an estimate of $50,000 to $70,000)
An original manuscript with the first few lines of Layla signed by Eric Clapton ($50,000 on an estimate of $50,000 to $70,000)
A God Save the Queen painted tarp used for the promotion of the Sex Pistol’s album ($50,000 on an estimate of $20,000 to $30,000)
Wire rim glasses worn by John Lennon ($43,750 on an estimate of $20,000 to $30,000)
An original working manuscript by Pete Townshend for the Who’s We’re Not Going to Take It ($37,500 on an estimate of $30,000 to $50,000)
A stage suit worn by David Bowie during his Glass Spiders Tour ($32,500 on an estimate of $20,000 to $30,000)
An original hand painted vinyl awning that was on the entrance of CBGB’s ($30,000 on an estimate of $25,000 to $35,000)
A John Lennon folio of 14 lithographs, Bag One ($22,500 on an estimate of $5,000 to $7,000)
An RCA TV from Elvis Presley’s Graceland that was shot with a gun with an Elvis signed note ($20,000 on an estimate of $9,000 to $12,000)
Four silkscreen prints on Japanese paper signed by David Bowie ($16,250 on an estimate of $5,000 to $7,000)
Autographs by all four Beatles from Shea Stadium, August 15, 1965 ($15,000 on an estimate of $4,000 to $6,000)
Autographs by all four Beatles on a Reveille Magazine poster ($11,250 on an estimate of $9,000 to $12,000)
