Bob Dylan should have a garage sale more often. His old Stratocaster guitar has sold for just under $1million.
It appears we are about to enter the era of million dollar music memorabilia.
The Fender Stratocaster that Bob Dylan used at the 1965 Newport Folk Festival, the show where he alienated his traditional folk music fans by going electric, sold at auction on Friday for $965,000.
The guitar was sold by a New Jersey family who had the guitar in their garage for the last 48 years after finding it on a plane in 1965. The family contacted Dylan’s management at the time on what they should do with the guitar but said they never received a reply. The PBS program History Detectives did a study on the guitar and determined it to be authentic after comparing its wood grain to photos from the festival.
Dylan originally disputed ownership of the guitar; however, an undisclosed agreement was made between the family and the singer.
The sale breaks the previous record of $959,500 for a guitar owned by Eric Clapton.
