Bon Jovi beating David Bowie in the USA was to be expected but Bowie outsold Bowie.
Bon Jovi ‘What About Now’ came in the middle of a major US tour and off the back of a massive marketing campaign.
Bowie ‘The Next Day’ was viral. Considering there was only 14,000 sales between Bon Jovi and Bowie, Bowie did well.
But the more interesting fact is that Bowie’s new album outsold Bowie’s biggest album from the past 20 years in its first week on sale. ‘Heathen’ released in 2002, was the fastest selling Bowie album since SoundScan starting collecting sales data in the early 90s. ‘Heathen’ debuted at no 14 in 2002 with 55,000 sales.
According to Keith Caulfield at Billboard, ‘The Next Day’ is David Bowie’s 7th Top 10 album. His last Top 10 was ‘Let’s Dance’ in 1983. Bowie’s highest charting album in America was ‘Station To Station’ in 1976. It peaked at number 3.
