Bret Michaels of Poison has undergone emergency surgery after cancelling a show just three songs in to his set.
The situation with Michaels was more complicated than just his diabetes. Blabbermouth is reporting that it was a combination of insulin shock and severe low blood sugar along with exhaustion, dehydration, fever and what was later determined to be a noro flu virus.
Michaels was taken to Catholic Medical Center in Manchester, NH where he continues to be treated, forcing him to cancel tonight’s show in Wilkes-Barre, PA with tomorrow nights Albany, NY concert in serious jeopardy.
Bret Michaels cut his show at the Palace Theatre in Manchester, NH after three songs on Thursday night after suffering a medical emergency.
Michaels, who suffers from type-1 diabetes, experienced very low blood sugar and rushed from the stage, telling guitarist Pete Evick to continue. Evick posted of the experience on Michael’s Facebook page.
This is a message I never imagined I’d have to post. Tonight in Manchester, NH 3 songs into the set Bret had me sing a song as he rushed off stage. In the 9 years I’ve stood next to him, I’ve never seen a look like the one on his face as if I was a complete stranger. One of the crew returned instantly to notify me that Bret’s blood sugar was extremely low.
He returned to the stage only to announce that he could not continue. As you all know he is a health fanatic and fiercely monitors his blood sugar, he basically had to be dragged off the stage in his sickest of conditions. When I rushed to the bus he could barley speak, but begged me to apologize to the fans and seemed only concerned for them.
As of now he is with paramedics being evaluated. We will keep you posted throughout the evening.
Pete Evick
A spokesperson returned to the page shortly after to only say “Sending a huge shout out to all the paramedics both on and off duty who have assisted Bret tonight. No words can thank you enough for your help.”
Evick also told Metal Sludge that Michaels had been taken to a local hospital.
Michaels suffered a series of medical emergencies in 2010 which included a brain haemorrhage, stroke and surgery to repair a hole in his heart.
