It was fascinating watching Australian music legend Brian Cadd perform a week apart, once with Russell Morris’ band and once with his own.
The Morris band is a rock band, poised for Russell’s new album ‘Black and Blue Heart’ due April 5. Brian’s band is tuned for what we now call Americana, the genre formally known as alt-Country, Outlaw Country and Country Rock.
Brian’s new album ‘Silver City’ was bred directly out of the roots of America’s folk rock ground zero. Songs from ‘Silver City’ took on the feel Brian originally intended for the album with violin and pedal steel constructing an alternate universe to the version of the songs performed with Russell Morris.
Brian’s band is:
Tony Naylor – guitar/vocals
Shane Reilly – pedal steel/vocals
Clare O’Meara – fiddle/accordion/keys/vocals
Paul Cartwright – bass/vocals
Geoff Cox – drums
‘Silver City’ is a remarkable body of work. The recreation of the title track has created a bookend to the ’72 Brian Cadd ‘Brian Cadd’ album bringing the 72-year old music icon full-circle. It also makes a statement about Brian’s musical journey to this point.

The live show spans 50 years of Australian music history. While Brian had already passed his apprenticeship with The Groop, this show goes back to 1969 to the release of the first Axiom single ‘Arkansas Grass’.
Within years Axiom was over, Cadd was solo and fast became Australia’s Leon Russell and his Bootleg Family Band Australia’s Shelter People. Jump forward to now and it is incredible that we can still experience such an innovative time in Australian music by one of the instigators of Australian music culture.
Cadd is fully aware that the world is moving on. He sings about our passed heroes in ‘Everybody’s Leaving’, a tribute to Glenn Frey, Prince, George Michael.

The other homage was the encore in the form of a medley of covers (mostly Stones).
While Brian plays six songs from ‘Silver City’ in his current setlist, some, such as ‘A Little Ray of Sunshine’ and ‘Silver City’ are remakes, ‘Slow Walk’ was also on the last Bootleg Family album but ‘Eye of the Hurricane’ and ‘Just Because She Can’ demonstrate growth and maturity of Cadd as a songwriter. Here is an artist in his twilight years still creating relevant new music for the 21st century.
Brian Cadd will be back in Australia (he lives in Woodstock, USA) for the Apia Good Times tour starting May 16 in Bunbury, Western Australia.
