Brian Wilson has returned to the studio and has taken with him his former Beach Boys mates Al Jardine and David Marks.
They may not be able to call themselves the Beach Boys (that moniker belongs to the Mike Love / Bruce Johnston version of the group) but Brian Wilson is trying to recreate the magic by recording a new album with bandmates Al Jardine and David Marks.
The three were, in effect, fired from the band at the end of the 50th Anniversary Tour last year when Love decided to strike back out on his own with the name. Wilson couldn’t say enough good things about the tour and album That’s Why God Made the Radio but has been forced to take another path.
The three Beach Boys members have been recording what is Wilson’s 11th solo album at Ocean Way Studios in Los Angeles with the added help of guitarist Jeff Beck. In a press release from Capitol Records, Wilson said “Jeff’s incredible guitar playing is exactly what I want for my new album.”
Also working on the album are Don Was and Paul Mertens and Jeffrey Foskett from Wilson’s touring band.
No release date has been set. A short tour is expected in support of the album.
