The City of Brisbane has recognised the achievements of punk pioneer Ed Kuepper by naming a park after him.
The Saints’ founder and guitar was at the park in Oxley to officially declare the park in his name.
Edmund Kuepper was born in Bremen, West Germany in 1955. The family migrated to Australia in the early 60s and settled in Brisbane.
Kuepper formed The Saints with Chris Bailey and Ivor Hay in 1973. In 1976, they independently pressed 500 copies of their first single ‘I’m Stranded’ because no record label was interested in them. It became a punk classic. After the song received positive reviews EMI signed the band and rushed out their debut album in December 1976.
Kuepper had a short stint in the band, staying for the first three albums in quick succession. The second album ‘Eternally Yours’ was released in May 1978, the third ‘Prehistoric Sounds’ came out in October 1978.
Ed Kuepper formed The Laughing Clowns in 1978 and started his prolific solo career with ‘Electrical Storm’ in 1985. The also has his grunge band The Aints (formed April 1991).
Ed Kuepper Park is in Oxley in Brisbane’s south-west along Oxley Road and Lawson Street.
