Britney Spears has confirmed she is leaving The X Factor US.
The Toxic hitmaker joined season two of the show last year.
She reportedly became the highest paid judge on a singing competition in television history with a salary of $15 million. She joined fellow judges Simon Cowell, Demi Lovato and music executive L.A. Reid on the panel.
Rumours swirled last month X Factor creator Simon was unimpressed with her performance and had decided to axe the star before season three.
A source subsequently told TMZ Britney was the one to jump from the show.
The 31-year-old star confirmed on Friday she had made the ‘difficult decision’ not to return so she can focus on her music.
‘I had an incredible time doing the show and I love the other judges and I am so proud of my teens but it’s time for me to get back in the studio,’ she said, referring to her duties as mentor of the show’s younger contestants.
‘Watching them all do their thing up on that stage every week made me miss performing so much! I can’t wait to get back out there and do what I love most,’ the star added.
Fox network confirmed the news.
Britney released her seventh studio album, Femme Fatale, in 2011. She is also rumoured to be in talks to headline her own show in Las Vegas.
The second season of The X Factor US wrapped last month.
L.A. Reid has already confirmed he will not be returning to the programme.
The judging line-up for next year’s show has not been announced.
