Britney Spears has alleged her father Jamie committed her to a mental health facility against her will.
The 37-year-old checked into the rehab centre last month (Apr19) amid reports of “emotional distress”. Soon after, fans speculated there was more to the story and staged a “Free Britney” movement, with protests and signs.
While Britney then issued a statement via social media and assured fans that “all is well”, at a hearing on Friday (10May19) about her dad’s conservatorship, the star reportedly told the judge she was forced into the 30-day stay without her consent.
Sources told TMZ.com the Toxic star told the judge that Jamie also forced her to take drugs, and Britney’s mother Lynne’s lawyer is said to have backed up the singer’s allegation.
Under Jamie’s conservatorship, which was enforced following Britney’s public breakdown in 2008, he doesn’t have the power to commit the mother-of-two in the facility against her will or ply her with drugs.
“A mental health facility that accepted an adult patient against that patient’s will when the conservator did not have such power would be committing a crime,” the insider told TMZ.
The source added that Britney asked the judge for several adjustments to Jamie’s conservatorship, but her requests were denied pending an expert evaluation of the …Baby One More Time star. Until that happens, there will be no change to the conservatorship.
Her mother Lynne previously filed a legal motion earlier this month asking to have more access to information about her daughter’s conservatorship.
Jamie is currently recovering after suffering a ruptured colon last year.
