Building Intended For Davy Jones Memorial Destroyed By Fire

A major fire in Beavertown, PA has destroyed an old church that was purchased with the intention of making it a memorial dedicated to the late Monkee Davy Jones.

The fire, which was called into the Snyder County (PA) 911 early Tuesday morning, destroyed the Beaver Lutheran Church which had been built in 1880.

Jones had lived in Snyder County for twenty years and had purchased the former church building. After his death in 2012, Cathy Whitehead, a fan, bought the property with the intent of turning it into a memorial, emphasizing that her intent was to honor the singer and not make it a for-profit business. The plan was to make the bottom floor the memorial while renovating the upper floor as her living space.

Davy had already put money into the former church before his death, refurbishing the bell and the steeple. Whitehead had said there was quite a bit of work to be done before she could open the memorial.

Ironically, Whitehead had purchased the structure with insurance money from her home in Dunellen, NJ which had also been destroyed by fire in October 2014.
