Butthole Surfers To Release First Album In 17 Years

American rockers the Butthole Surfers released their eight album, Weird Revolution, in 2001 and, even though they have occasionally played shows over the years, they have been on an unofficial hiatus.

In March of this year, member Paul Leary told The Quietus “We’ve all been busy with our own separate things, and I’ve done a lot of producing in the past few years, and I’ve got to the point now where I feel like I’ve done doing that for a while, so it’s time to make a new Butthole Surfers album. Especially now that Trump is president, jeez! If there was ever a time for a Butthole Surfers album it’s fucking now. It just doesn’t get any weirder than that.”

In a newly published article by Rolling Stone, Gibby Haynes has confirmed that the album is in process, recorded in Leary’s living room, and should be out next year. Gibby admits that nobody has ever made a descent record 35 years into their career “Well, except for Johnny Cash. But we’re not Johnny Cash. It’s gonna be a tough road to do a record that’s presentable. It’s really gonna be hard. … But given that, looking forward to it!”

He went on to say that three songs are done and initial tracks recorded for fifteen more. Five Music, Inc., part of Artist Network Management, has committed to releasing the set.

The current lineup consists of founders Haynes and Leary, who started the group in 1981, along with King Coffey, who has been with them since 1983, and Jeff Pinkus (1986 to 1994 and 2008 to today).

On November 17, the group is also releasing a new 10″ vinyl remaster of their 1987 album Locust Abortion Technique.
