78-year old American soul and gospel singer Candi Staton has recruited indie producer Mark Nevers to create the sound for her 30th album ‘Unstoppable’.
Nevers has worked with Staton in the past, 12 years ago on her ‘His Hands’ album. He was also once a member of alt-Country band Lambchop. His credits include working with Billy Ray Cyrus, Amy Grant, Bobby Bare Jr, Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy and Lou Barlow.
Candi Staton had her first international hit in 1976 with ‘Young Hearts Run Free’. It was covered by Kym Mazelle for the 1996 ‘Romeo + Juliet’ movie.
In the 1950s Candi (still a teenager) toured as part of the Jewell Gospel Trio with Aretha Franklin’s father C.L. Franklin and Mahalia Jackson. In 1970 she married soul singer Clarence Carter. It was her second marriage. They had one child, Clarence Carter Jr. Carter was best known for the hits ‘Patches’ (1972) and ‘Strokin’ (1984).
