Baseball’s biggest games begin tonight Kansas City as the San Francisco Giants meet the Royals in the fall classic but, for music fans, it’s all about the minutes before the game.
Over the years, there have been glorious performances of The Star Spangled Banner at sporting events (Whitney Houston) and the truly awful (Rosanne Barr) so it is a wonder that artists are willing to put the spotlight on themselves in front of such big audiences. For this year’s series, four adventurous performers have accepted that challenge.
For the opener tonight, it’s three-time Grammy Award winner Trisha Yearwood, taking a break from touring with husband Garth Brooks. Then, on Saturday in San Francisco for game 4, we get a rarity, a purely instrumental version of the national anthem by Carlos Santana and his son.
In between comes American Idol winner Phillip Phillips for game 2 and country’s Little Big Town at game 3.
Of course, if the Royals can be stopped (they’ve won their last eight games), there could be games 5, 6 and 7 in the series with a new cast of singers. Names will be announced when/if those games are needed.
