Carly Rae Jepsen isn’t trying to compete with Taylor Swift.
The 29-year-old’s new album Emotion has an 80s vibe to it, and has led to a number of comparisons with Taylor’s current album 1989. But while Carly is a big fan of the 25-year-old, she doesn’t think their sound is too similar.
‘I don’t really feel the need to compare,’ she explained to Entertainment Tonight. ‘I think that Taylor’s fantastic and I think she made a really fantastic record, but they’re different types of music and I think there’s room for it all.’
While Carly isn’t stressing out about the comparisons, she admitted to the outlet that she did have a sense of pressure about her new album, considering how successful her former hit Call Me Maybe has been. The star feared being branded a one-hit wonder, so took plenty of time to work on Emotion, and produce a solid record.
‘I mean, that was a bit of a monster of a song – it was an incredible gift but definitely a challenge and I think that’s part of the reason probably that it was so vital to me to take my time with this album and make sure that every song really had a home and a reason for being there,’ she explained. ‘I think that I learned a little bit about taking more of a lead role in my own project – not that I wasn’t very vocal with Kiss, but I think if you’re not willing to direct and steer the ship a bit it kind of gets steered for you.’
