Carly Rae Jepsen kept wondering if it was OK for her to laugh at Justin Bieber’s roast.
In May, Justin featured in the iconic Comedy Central roast, which saw a number of stars poke fun at him. Nothing was off limits, with jokes about his hair cut, sex life and music all fired at the star. The 21-year-old singer took the pasting with good grace, and his friend Carly was there to watch it all go down.
“I was there in the front row for the Bieber roast. That was a lot of fun – you could see he was so light-hearted about it,” she told Heat Radio.
“I was proud. It was funny, we were on a table with all the people from his management team, and every time there was a good joke, we were all guilty drinking our wine and being like, ‘Is it OK if we laugh?'”
Carly, 29, is looked after by Scooter Braun who is also Justin’s manager. It means the pair have spent a great deal of time together and become close, with Carly refusing to hear a bad word about her fellow Canadian star.
“We’re good friends. We’ve travelled the world a lot together. When you experience something as crazy as that, you always feel bonded. I think his new song is awesome,” she said.
Justin might be one of the most instantly recognisable people in the world, but Carly’s star is also rising. Her song Call Me Maybe was a global smash and her new work is doing well too. Among it is Run Away with Me, which has a fun video made of a montage of clips shot by her boyfriend.
“I don’t break into song in the middle of just anywhere, but it’s weird how quickly I started doing that,” she laughed. “Once you dip your toes in humiliation, it’s like, ‘Do you know what? I’ve already made a fool of myself, I’m going to go for it.’ It was a lot of fun.”
