‘Beautiful: The Carole King Musical’ is heading to Broadway.
The Broadway musical theater is filled with two types of musicals, those based on movies and those based on the history of popular music of the last 60 years and the people who made that music.
The latest to be announced is Beautiful: The Carole King Musical which will chronicle her life and music, following in the footsteps of the very successful Four Seasons musical Jersey Boys. The show is scheduled to open next spring but will have a pre-Broadway run at the end of this year.
Beautiful will be produced Paul Blake and Sony-ATV Music Publishing with a book by Douglas McGrath who was nominated for an Academy Award for writing Woody Allen’s Bullets Over Broadway. Music, of course, will be from the catalog of Carole King, some songs with former partner and ex-husband Gerry Goffin and a few from Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil.
King said in a statement “What’s so great about this for me is that musicals were a major influence on my songwriting. In fact, when Gerry and I first met, we made a bargain that I would write music for the Broadway show he wanted to write if he wrote lyrics for my rock ‘n’ roll songs. The songs took off, and the show idea never came to fruition. Now that our songs have merged with a Broadway show, we’ve come full circle.”
