Celine Dion could feel the love of her late husband Rene Angelil at a tribute event held in his honor on Wednesday night.
The 47-year-old singer struggled to control her emotions as she took to the stage at Caesar’s Palace, Las Vegas, where she had been performing a residency up until Rene’s death in January.
Celine didn’t perform for the occasion, but used the opportunity to address the crowd and thank everyone for the tributes that had been paid to Rene throughout the evening.
“This is my home away from home,” Celine said. “At the same time I’m supposed to feel extremely comfortable being home and right now I’m not sure how comfortable I feel.
“I feel his love in this room. I feel his strength and his warmth being reflected in all of you. Rene always surrounded me with the best people who believed in us and always worked so hard on our behalf.”
Celine was joined by Rene’s children from previous marriages and his brother at the memorial event. Many of her late husband’s music industry friends and business associates, including Caesars Palace executives, recalled their memories of the music manager.
It was towards the end of her speech that Celine became overcome with emotions, and let the tears flow as she concluded: “On behalf of my family, thank you again for being here with us this evening for this beautiful tribute to mon amour. Rene I love you, so much, merci, good night.”
Fans were able to watch the tribute via a livestream available online.
Rene lost his battle with cancer in January and his official memorial was held in his native Montreal, at the church where he wed the My Heart Will Go On singer in 1994 and they baptized their first son, Rene-Charles. Thousands of fans and mourners flocked to the Notre-Dame Basilica to pay their last respects to the musician and manager.
His funeral was held at the same church the following day.
