Chas Hodges, half of the iconic UK duo Chas & Dave, has died at the age of 74 after suffering from cancer.
Chas was diagnosed with cancer of the oesophagus in early 2017 and was treated with chemotherapy. Chas & Dave stopped touring in August, 2017.
In a statement at the Chas & Dave Facebook page it was announced, “It is with tremendous sadness that we announce the passing of our very own Chas Hodges.
Despite receiving successful treatment for oesophageal cancer recently, Chas suffered organ failure and passed away peacefully in his sleep in the early hours of Saturday September 22nd.
We would like to thank our fans for their fantastic support and goodwill at this difficult time”.
Chas Hodges started his career as a session musician. He worked on recordings for Jerry Lee Lewis and Gene Vincent in the early days. He was in a band The Outlaws that also included a pre-Deep Purple Ritchie Blackmore. Ritchie was on lead guitar, Chas on bass.
His next band was Head Hands & Feet with Albert Lee. Lee, who was recently in Australia, performed the Head Hands & Feet track ‘Country Boy’ at his shows.
Hodges then joined The Rockers with Roy Wood (Wizzard), Phil Lynott (Thin Lizzy) and John Coglan (Status Quo). In 1975, he and Dave (Peacock) played on Labi Siffre’s ‘Remember My Song’ which was later sample by Eminem in ‘My Name Is’.
In the UK, Chas & Dave had 11 Top 40 hits between 1979 and 1987.
‘Ain’t No Pleasing You’, their biggest hit globally, reached no 2 in the UK.
