Clark McEntire, father of country music Hall of Fame member Reba McEntire, died on Thursday in Coalgate, OK at the age of 86. Clark had been a in a nursing home.
Reba took to her Facebook page to inform fan’s of his passing:
Daddy passed away last night in Coalgate, OK at 11 pm CST. He had been in the nursing home for a while and we’re very thankful he is not suffering anymore. He was a born and bred cowboy through and through. He had been sick for 5 years. It makes total sense to me, he always told us kids never to run your horse to the barn. He was just taking his time to go on home.
Following in his own father’s footsteps, Clark entered the rodeo circuit and became a three-time world champion steer roper (1957, 1958, 1961) In 1979, he was inducted into the ProRodeo Hall of Fame. Reba released the song Daddy in 1979 about Clark.
Clark was also rancher, buying 40 acres of land in the early 50’s that he had grown to 8,000 acres.
He and his wife, Jacqueline, had four children, Reba, Susie, Alice and Pake. Jacqueline taught them music and, while traveling back and forth to rodeos with their father, they practiced their craft. Reba, Alcie and Pake eventually forming the group The Singing McEntires.
