Cliff Richard has returned to the U.K. to be interviewed by police in South Yorkshire.
Richard is being investigated in the possible sexual assault of a male under the age of 16 at a 1985 Billy Graham event at the Sheffield United’s soccer stadium.
A police spokesman would not specifically identify Richard as he has not been arrested, but said “The man was interviewed under caution but was not arrested. He entered South Yorkshire Police premises by arrangement.”
In Britain, being interviewed by police “under caution” means that the conversation was recorded and can be used if there is a future trial.
A spokesman for Richard confirmed that Richard had been interviewed. “Today Sir Cliff Richard voluntarily met with and was interviewed by members of South Yorkshire Police. He was not arrested or charged. He co-operated fully with officers and answered the questions put to him. Other than restating that this allegation is completely false and that he will continue to co-operate fully with the police, it would not be appropriate for Sir Cliff to say anything further at this time.”
Richard’s Berkshire apartment was recently raided by police and covered in detail by the BBC even though the action was supposed to be a secret. Both the police and the BBC have been summoned to appear before the Home Affairs Select Committee to explain how the network was able to get advanced notice of the raid.
